2012 Nissan Juke – Subcompact Crossover The difference between the real future and the science fiction future is a little more blurry, now that the Nissan Juke is on the scene. Crossovers are big sellers in the U.S. now, but are we quite ready for the alien styling and the whiz-bang technology baked into this subcompact crossover? That’s not entirely clear, but what is certain is that the Juke is like nothing before it, and could be like nothing after it. The Juke’s not just very small, and very quick, it’s very…distinctive. It doesn’t have many straight lines or pretty viewing angles. It’s an extrovert of the tattooed, ritual-scarred kind.
2012 Nissan Juke – Sporty Compact – Lightweight Body More sporty subcompact than all-weather SUV, the plump-bottom, angle-backed Juke has one of the most sophisticated drivetrains available in any Nissan. It teams a 188-horsepower, 1.6-liter four with a lightweight body and an independent front suspension to give the Juke exciting high-rpm responsiveness and swift steering.
Its very size also gives the Juke a stiff ride, which we expect, but it doesn’t necessarily give the Juke great gas mileage, which is a rude surprise for anyone cross-shopping more conventional subcompacts like the Accent, Fiesta or Fit.
2012 Nissan Juke – Icon Control System The Juke has lots of clever details encased in its….exoskeleton? The I-CON control system remaps throttle and transmission controls to boost fuel economy or sporty responses, and shares LCD screen space with the Juke’s climate controls. All-wheel drive is an option, but it’s more there as a side dish to that model’s more advanced rear suspension, less for traction advantages in snow and ice. A nice, inexpensive navigation system is an option, but with it and the other big-ticket items, the subcompact Juke can nudge $25,000.
Nissan knows the Juke’s appeal is narrow and limited, but it’s hoping to dodge through the defensive lines put up by excellent, mainstream designs like the Kia Sportage, to find buyers who want something completely unexpected. They’ll get it in mega-doses in the Juke, and maybe they’ll also get a taste of the future of crossovers while they’re at it.

The 2011 Nissan Juke just as cool and funky as it can be! Nissan’s nutty design team really comes into its own with Juke. Outside, it looks the automotive equivalent of Dora the Explorer with its chunky body, bulging eyes, and sharp detail creases. The view from the inside is dominated at night by odd yellow marker light slivers atop the front light jutting from the fenders.
Kind of cool actually. Also, the cowl is extremely low. Honda Civic broke that ground in the early 80′s and it remains a very compelling feature.
Look again at the base price and then the unbelievable list of included features – very nice leather seats, funky touchscreen nav system, iPod interface, heated seats, moonroof, on and on and then look at how beautiful everything comes together inside. Clearly these designers are firing on all cylinders.
As is the turbocharged four, which is mated to perfectly geared six speed manual. Love the crisp stick. And I wouldn’t bother with the CVT considering the manual’s decent 24city/21 EPA rating. Traction control was boon on my wintery country road, and cruising at 80mph on the freeway feels natural.
review by Jean Jennings, Editor In Chief – Automobile
I thought the Juke was a joke when Nissan first released information and pictures of the frog-eyed compact. Surely, no one would ever be caught driving this thing, much less the style conscious young male enthusiast the Juke was supposedly targeting. In fact, the jike is on me, because I a young male enthusiast, would certainly consider buying the Juke. For one, that goofy styling really works in person. It’s as if Nissan designers put the whimsical charm of the Cube in a petri dish and spliced in a Y-chromosome from the GT-R. Same thing on the inside, where cool LCD readouts say “sporty” but have the same overall effect as the Cubes’s shag carpets and lounge chairs.

The engine, the first application in North America, combines the power of a larger engine with the fuel economy of a smaller powerplant. JUKE’s aggressive styling brings a breath of fresh air to the segment. Built on Nissan’s proven global B-platform, JUKE looks exactly like it drives – fun, bold and exciting. It features a powerful front end treatment with the turn signals integrated into the front fenders, a high beltline and coupe-like falling roofline. Other exterior details include body-colored outside mirrors and front door handles, “hidden” rear door handles and standard 17-inch wheels and tires. The Nissan JUKE interior is equally aggressive with bolstered front seats, a wide instrument panel and a unique center console inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank and finished in a high-gloss paint. The gear shift sits on top of the console, with a high-mounted shift lever for sporty driving. In the rear, a fold-down 60/40-split bench seat and flat load floor provide passenger and cargo hauling flexibility. Available interior features range from leather-appointed seats and RearView Monitor to Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Ignition and Nissan Navigation System with XM NavTraffic® Real-Time Traffic Information (XM® subscription required, sold separately). A long list of safety features is also standard, including six air bags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). Powering Nissan JUKE is a standard 1.6-liter Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™) Turbo, 16-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Two transmissions are offered – Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) with S-Mode and a 6-speed manual transmission (SV FWD and SL FWD models only). Fuel economy is rated at 27 mpg City and 32 mpg Highway for JUKE CVT FWD models. JUKE’s torque vectoring AWD system splits torque up to 50:50 between the front and rear wheels and can also split torque from side to side across the rear axle. When cornering, the system helps reduce understeer and enhance the vehicle’s cornering feel. Another new-to-Nissan technology debuting on JUKE is the innovative Integrated Control (I-CON) system. It combines control of the automatic A/C and the three-mode drive selector – Normal for everyday driving, Sport for a more intense performance feel and Eco for maximum efficiency, adjusting throttle response, transmission (CVT mapping) and steering feel for the precise ride the driver desires.

- Nissan Juke’s rear door handles are painted black to blend into the dark window frame near the roof for a clean two-door appearance.
- Nissan Juke’s slim waist is topped by a tapered roofline that cascades to a rear hatch flanked by boomerang-shaped tail lamps.
- A chrome “JUKE” badge is prominently displayed on the back fender.
- Nissan Juke’s base S, SV and upscale SL models are moved by a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that builds a spirited 188 horsepower.

What’s standard?
All Nissan Jukes come equipped with standard FWD and CVT for fuel economy that yields 27 miles per gallon around town and 32-mpg on the open road.
The Nissan Juke’s inside cabin space fits five occupants. Four adult passengers ride comfortably with good knee and legroom for those in the back seat. Head room is equally accommodating with commanding seat positions front and rear.
When unoccupied, the 60/40-split rear bench seat can be folded flat for 35.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Nissan Juke’s motorsport cabin theme features front seats that are divided by a cleverly designed motorcycle-inspired center console that houses the floor-mounted shifter.
